What makes it intriguing is that we don't really know how the story began for this boy, and we don't yet know how it will turn out. It's worth a read if you are an adoptive parent or a parent of a child that is different. I usually read a book in small increments, sometimes over months. When I started to read this book, I could not put it down and finished it the same day. Lesli shares a deeply emotional experience and takes the reader on an amazing journey from the perspective of her adopted son, Dang Guole. This unique style is extremely effective in engaging the reader in the emotional roller coaster and helps us see life from a new perspective. Rather than evaluate Dang Guole from our own cultural and individual biases, we turn the camera around and see the world, the schools, the care givers and those who give little care and especially his amazing adoptive family from the perspective of this incredible boy. Witnessing the transformation of his situation from neglect and abuse to a new life in a new land with a loving, caring, and emotionally invested family is a true gift that Lesli has shared with us. Seeing close up the impact that the challenges his "different" abilities and inner struggles with his dark past have had on Lesli and her family is heart wrenching at times but the true message is one of hope and love. Dang Guole is a very happy and lucky boy and that is really all that matters. As a parent of a child with severe physical disabilities, I appreciate Lesli's example of dealing with the challenges one step at a time and doing it with amazing grace. The degree of empathy that Lesli has with her son is evident in every passage of the book and is a wonder to behold. I strongly recommend this book to anyone with a "special" child or anyone who wants to better understand this very different life that some of us live. Thank you Lesli for sharing with us.
This book was a wonderful read! The author presents the story with incredible insight into her son's view of life. It really makes one stop and think about how fortunate our lives are. I developed a great appreciation for this small boy, Guo.
The most significant point made in Guo's life is found on page 106. "When it comes right down to it, and it always comes right down to it, we are all retarded or intellectually disabled in certain areas in different times of our lives." I truly believe this statement and have operated with this belief as a teacher with 33 years experience. I began my master's degree in child development in 1975 - when "special education" was becoming the big "buzzword". The school district asked me to change my major to "special education". I was happy to do this since I believe "special education" IS "child development" !! Every person learns in his or her own way and every student deserves teachers and staff who are willing to take the time and make the effort to learn what this is.
This is a beautiful, heartfelt story about how a tiny orphan from China confounds the educational establishment in Texas. I had the honor of being present when Dang Guole arrived on the scene, and to know and love him, his Big Sister Joy, mom and dad. Readers will marvel at the journey Grayson and the Hicks-Lee clan have made, and should be frustrated how the professionals tried to stuff a tiny round boy into a square institution.
Beautiful adoption story told from the child's point of view with contributing comments from his parents, sister, teachers, social worker, and others who are part of his adoption journey. With great care, the author takes you through her son's adoption experiences from China to the United States, the strangeness of his new life, the memories from his old life, the challenges of becoming a family and all the complications that come from educating a child who doesn't fit any of the easily definable categories. Adoptive parents and parents of children with special needs will find this book a great comfort and treat. Adoption books often focus on the parent's side of the story, but this book is about the child.

My friend, Lesli Hicks, has written a beautiful account of the journey of their adopted son from China. This young boy has gone from being abandoned in a Chinese market as a baby, to being abused by an unfit foster mother, to joining a loving family across the world in our home town of San Antonio. The book is written from the perspective of this joyful boy who loves his forever family and fully embraces his new life. It also tells of his daily struggles & victories, as his amazing parents advocated for him to get the best education & opportunities. I can't tell you how many times I found myself smiling, chuckling & crying -- all in the same chapter-- while reading this entertaining & emotional book. It's a touching tribute to the strength of a mother's love for her children.
